RESUMO

While land-based sources of marine plastic pollution have gained widespread attention, marine-based sources are less extensively investigated. Here, we provide the first in-depth description of abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) on northern and southern beaches of the English Southwest Peninsula, Great Britain's region of highest ALDFG density. Three distinct categories were recorded: twisted rope (0.28 ± 0.14 m-1, 17%), braided rope (0.56 ± 0.28 m-1, 33%) and filament (0.84 ± 0.41 m-1, 50%), which likely correspond to fishing rope, net and line. Estimating the disintegration of ALDFG from length and filament number suggests that it has the potential to generate 1277 ± 431 microplastic pieces m-1, with fishing rope (44%) and net (49%) as the largest emitters. Importantly, ALDFG was over five times more abundant on the south coast, which is likely attributable to the three times higher fishing intensity in that area.

ABSTRACT There are many studies aimed at reducing the volume of waste from the fishing industry. These residues are an important source of raw material in organic production systems when composted. The objective of this work was to evaluate the parameters of total nutrient contents of the organic compost made with fish residues, comparing it to two other compositions, in addition to using it as substrate in the production of lettuce seedlings (Lactuca sativa). In the evaluation of lettuce seedlings production, a completely randomized design was used, with six treatments and four replications. The following were evaluated: Leaf quantity (QF), root length (CR), Aerial part dry mass (MSPA), and root dry mass (MSR). The parameters of organic matter (OM), C/N ratio and cation exchange capacity (CTC) were higher in the fish residue compound. For the production of MSPA, treatments T3 (compound made with fish residues) and T2 presented the highest averages, being treatment T2 (compound made with agroindustrial residues of the Carnauba palm) presented the highest averages, with T2 presenting the highest mean for MSR. For QF, the best results (p = 0.02) were obtained by T6 treatment, whose lettuce seedlings had a greater number of leaves and root length. The results suggest viability in the production of lettuce seedlings using a substrate based on fish residues.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fishing industry workers are exposed to hazardous working conditions, engage in strenuous labor, and work long hours in variable weather conditions. Despite these known employment challenges, little is known of their perceived occupational health and safety concerns. In this pilot study, we: (1) describe fishermen's perceptions on worker- and organizational-level characteristics that impact occupational health and safety; and (2) estimate environmental exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) encountered during fishing activities. METHODS: We collected both qualitative and quantitative data from Mississippi and Florida fishermen. Using an ethnographic approach, the study team conducted 1-h key informant interviews, administered a one-page demographic survey, and collected objective measurements to PAHs using silicone-based passive sampling wristbands. RESULTS: Study participants (n = 17) had a mean age of 50.9 years (SD = 11.7), 88.2% were male, 94.1% white, 100.0% non-Hispanic/Latino, and 52.9% were married. Approximately, 87.5% reported fishing as their primary job, with a mean of 26.4 years in the industry (SD = 15.3). Four broad themes describing the culture of the fishing industry, common workplace exposures that impact fishermen's safety and health, and facilitators and barriers to safety while working in the fishing industry were documented. Deckhands had the lowest mean exposure to PAHs (8.3 ppb), followed by crew members (11.0 ppb), captains (82.64 ppb), and net makers (208.1 ppb). CONCLUSIONS: Gulf coast fishermen expressed specific occupational health and safety concerns and were exposed to carcinogenic PAHs during regular work. Opportunities exist and strategies are needed for health protection and health promotion interventions among Gulf fishermen.

RESUMO

This data article features four figures showing the correlations between the biomass of fish and scallop landed in Okhotsk subprefecture (Hokkaido, Japan) and airfreights from Memanbetsu Airport, a dominant airport in the subprefecture. Total landings of fish and scallop were collected from Hokkaido government office website while the airfreight data were acquired from the Memanbetsu Airport management office. The second and third figures in this data article are in a matrix heatmap format and a line graph, representing the statistical monthly data of airfreights from the airport and fish and scallop landings in the subprefecture; data were gathered from 2009 to 2018. Data were gathered from 2009 to 2018. The airfreight data reflect the increase and decrease in the total fish or scallop landings in the subprefecture. A Pearson's correlation coefficient and cross-correlation statistics between monthly airfreight and monthly fish landings were performed to assess their correlation and annual periodic relationship. This article also provides a data figure that shows an increasing active opening ratio to secure human resources in the motor truck transportation industry in Japan. This may be due to a workforce shortage in this trade. Annual data on the active opening ratio for jobs in Japan from 2001 to 2018 were collected from the open data available on the website of the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

ABSTRACT The decrease in the consumption of saturated fats provided by animal foods and the search for healthier foods is a worldwide trend. Tilapia production in Colombia has been growing rapidly in recent decades, which raises the need to find alternatives for processing. The substitution of fats for a mixture of pork skin, water and quinoa fiber (PCFQ) in tilapia fillet sausages was evaluated. The chemical composition of the processed sausages, the caloric content, the pH, the CIELab color coordinates, the cooking moisture losses, the emulsion stability, the texture profile and the sensory assessment were determined. The addition of PCFQ led to an increase in moisture and total proteins, thanks to the water retention capacity of quinoa fiber. The sausage with the highest PCFQ addition (20%), obtained 48.2% less fat, 32.3% less calories and 31.1% loss of moisture from cooking compared to the control sausage. More stable meat emulsions were obtained with good texture profile parameters -TPA. Regarding sensory parameters, no significant differences were observed between processed sausages and control sausage. Therefore, it is concluded that the mixture can be used as a fat substitute in the preparation of tilapia fillet sausages, without affecting its physicochemical and sensory properties.

RESUMO

The aim of the present research was to obtain antioxidant compounds through the fermentation of fish byproducts by bacteria isolated from sea bass viscera. To that purpose, bacteria from sea bass stomach, intestine, and colon were isolated. With the selected bacteria, growing research was undertaken, fermenting different broths prepared with sea bass meat or byproducts. After the fermentation, the antioxidant activity, phenolic acids, and some proteins were evaluated. The main phenolic acids obtained were DL-3-phenyl-lactic acid and benzoic acid at a maximum concentration of 466 and 314 ppb, respectively. The best antioxidant activity was found in the extracts obtained after the fermentation of fish byproducts broth by bacteria isolated from the colon (6502 µM TE) and stomach (4797 µM TE). Moreover, a positive correlation was found between phenolic acids obtained after the fermentation process and the antioxidant activity of the samples. It was also concluded that the lactic acid bacteria isolated from sea bass had an important proteolytic capacity and were able to synthesize phenolic acids with antioxidant capacity. This work has shown the relevance of fermentation as a useful tool to valorize fish byproducts, giving them an added economic value and reducing their environmental impact.

RESUMO

Marine litter is a global, persistent, and increasing threat to the oceans, and numerous initiatives aim to address this challenge. Fishing For Litter (FFL) is a voluntary clean-up scheme, where litter is collected as part of routine fishing operations. We surveyed fishers (n = 97) and stakeholders (n = 22) in the UK to investigate perceptions of FFL, its strengths and weaknesses, and potential co-benefits of the scheme. Fishers reported being aware of and concerned about the negative impacts of litter. Overall, FFL was evaluated very positively (7.85/10). In addition, FFL fishers reported less environmentally harmful waste management behaviors both out at sea and in other contexts than did non-FFL fishers. Fishers and stakeholders listed strengths and weaknesses of the scheme and made suggestions for future changes. As well as directly helping to remove litter, this paper demonstrates that clean-up schemes can make a contribution to addressing the underlying causes of marine pollution.

RESUMO

Abstract: Background: The fishing colony of the Picinguaba neighborhood is located at the northern end of the coast of the state of São Paulo. It has about 300 residents, of which approximately 100 are professional fishermen. Objectives: This study aimed to identify the main dermatoses of the community in comparison with other populations, and their frequency. Methods: The dermatoses were identified and tabulated for two years, in a prospective study carried out on monthly trips to the fishermen's colony in Picinguaba. Results: One hundred and eighteen patients were attended and followed up, which is equivalent to about 1/3 of the colony's inhabitants. Of these, 43 were children (under the age of 14) and 75 were adolescents and adults. The diseases observed were catalogued according to the age groups. Although most dermatoses in the community were similar with those observed in the general population, some specific cases could be seen, such as folliculitis on the legs of fishermen and an unexpected low frequency of actinic lesions in the colony, as well as dermatitis by aquatic animals. Study Limitations: The limitations were monthly attendance and the spontaneous demand of the patients. Conclusions: The finding of community-specific dermatoses and the low incidence of malignant and pre-malignant tumors associated with sun exposure needs further studies for better clarification.

RESUMO

Large amounts of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) have, and continue to be, released into the freshwater ecosystems of Pakistan. However, there is limited information available on the ecological risk of PTEs from sediments and fish consumption, for both the general population and fishermen, at the national scale in Pakistan. In this study, water, sediments and fish samples were collected from major rivers (Chenab, Upper Indus, Lower Indus and Kabul) across Pakistan and analyzed through Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy ICP-AES and Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry (AFS), respectively. Ecological risk analysis of sediments revealed that Cd posed a high ecological risk in the Upper Indus and Chenab, a considerable risk in the Lower Indus, and moderate risk in the Kabul. The target hazard quotient of As through fish tissue consumption exceeded safety levels for fishermen at all the rivers, where Cd exceeded at Upper Indus and Chenab, and Pb for Chenab fishermen only. For the general population, PTE ingestion through fish tissues was within the safety limits at all rivers. Meanwhile, the total target hazard quotient in all three rivers exceeded the safety limit, representing a high risk for the fishermen of Pakistan. The results show that ecological risk and target hazard quotient assessment not only provides valuable information for future research in terms of PTE contamination in the major rivers of Pakistan, but also all the metal pollutants from rivers finally reach to Arabian Sea, therefore might pose a risk to marine ecosystem at national and international scale.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore what is known on community-based food production initiatives (CFPIs) in Small Island Developing States, particularly the health, social, economic, and environmental impacts of and on CFPIs. METHODS: This was a systematic scoping review using 14 electronic databases to identify articles published from 1997 to 2016 on the topic of CFPIs in Small Island Developing States. From 8 215 articles found, 153 were eligible and abstracted. Analysis focused on geographic location, typology, methodology, study design, theoretical frameworks, and impacts. RESULTS: Most research was conducted in the Pacific or Caribbean (49% and 43% of studies, respectively) and primarily focused on fishing and crop farming (40%, 34%). Findings indicate a predominance of research focusing on the environmental impact of marine and coastal resources on CFPIs, and very limited evidence of CFPI impact on human health, particularly nutrition and diet-related outcomes. There was a lack of explicit theoretical frameworks to explain the impacts of CFPIs. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence of impacts of CPFIs in Small Island Developing States is limited and the approaches taken are inconsistent. This review demonstrates the need and provides a basis for developing a coherent body of methods to examine the impacts of CFPIs and provide evidence to guide policy, especially as it relates to health.

Modern aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food sectors in the world. Beyond having productivity advantages, tilapia fish yields products with great market acceptance. For its nutrition, additives aiming at increasing zootechnical, pigmenting or antioxidant features may be used. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the supplementation of tilapia diets with Rubrivivax gelatinosus biomass on the performance and the health of animals (histology and hematology), and on the quality of fillets (pH, proximate composition, color and rancidity). The experiment comprised six treatments, made of a control group with no additives, a group containing commercial pigments and four groups with biomass at 175, 350, 700 and 1400 mg/kg. Fish weighing 21.42±5.65g were reared for 74 days in a system with water recirculation and slaughtered for analyzes. No differences were detected for performance, histological and hematological analyzes. Fillets of the groups fed additives had lower moisture content than the control group while the fillets of the groups fed the biomass had the highest protein percentages. No differences were detected among treatments for pH, lipids and ash values. Regarding to the color of the fillets, all treatments with additives increased redness. For all treatments, rancidity in the fillets increased during storage, although the groups treated with the highest biomass concentrations had the lowest values. R. gelatinosus biomass did not change performance and animal health, and proved to be capable of improving fillets quality features and conservation.

Abstract Introduction: commercial fishing is a dangerous activity which is associated with high morbimortality. However, there are few studies on fishing workers' eye injuries. Objective: to identify occupational ocular injuries in commercial fishing and possible related risk and protection factors. Methods: literature review on the databases MedLine, LILACS-BIREME, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Cochrane through the searching terms "fishing" and "ocular/eye injury". Both were taken into account: full articles available in English, Portuguese or Spanish, published from April 1993 to April 2013, and research involving human beings. Results: 18 articles from 12 countries were included. Most studies were cross-sectional. Discussion: the most frequent injuries were due to excessive solar exposure, such as cataract and senile macular degeneration, and to ocular trauma, mainly perforations by fishhook or by fragments of marine animals. These injuries were associated with risk factors like fish and other seafood handling and long working time. According to the studies, most of the eye injuries related to fishing can be prevented, indicating the need for health promoting policies aimed at the population involved in this activity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of women in fishing industry organisations and communities in promoting best-practice health behaviours among fishers in Australia. DESIGN: This paper reports aspects of research that examined how the fishing industry can best support physical health and mental well-being of fishers. The study employed a mixed-methods, multisite case study approach. Data were gathered from face-to-face and phone interactions. SETTING: Two sites in Victoria and one in Western Australia. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-one male fishers, including commercial licence owners, skippers, deckhands, three female family members, three fishing association representatives, one local government representative, two health care providers, and three regional health planning and funding bodies. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Not applicable. RESULTS: Often unrecognised, women associated with the fishing industry are integral to the promotion of good health for fishers. They are key to identifying health issues (particularly mental health issues) and proposing community-based health and well-being strategies. They often do so by incorporating health information and activities into 'soft entry points' - informal, non-health service mechanisms by which fishers can access health information and health services. CONCLUSIONS: While not working at the industry coalface, women have a stake, and are key players, in the commercial fishing industry. Their knowledge of, and credibility within, fishing enterprises makes them valuable sources of information about health issues facing the industry and effective strategies to address them. This expertise should be applied in conjunction with industry associations and health providers to achieve better health outcomes for fishers and their families.

This study aims to analyze factors associated with sick leave rates among workers in the meat, fish, and seafood industries in Brazil. The study analyzed all sick leave benefits granted by the country's social security system to workers in these industries in 2008. Incidence of sick leave per 10 thousand jobs was stratified by sex, age, diagnosis, job position, State, and nature and length of benefits. The study analyzed 31,913 sick leaves, with an annual incidence of 788.7. Meat processing and packaging showed the highest incidence, and fish and seafood processing and packaging showed the longest mean length of sick leave. Women showed a higher sick leave incidence, while men received longer average sick leaves. Injuries, musculoskeletal disorders, and mental disorders accounted for 67.2% of sick leaves. The most common diagnoses were lower back pain, first-trimester bleeding in pregnancy, and depression. The data suggest poor job protection and adverse working conditions in these industries.

BACKGROUND: To establish the causes of mortality in the British fishing industry from 1900 up to 2010, to investigate long term trends in mortality and to identify causal factors in the mortality patterns and rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A longitudinal study, based on examinations of official death inquiry files, marine accident investigation files and reports, death registers and annual death returns. RESULTS: Mortality rates from accidents while working at sea remain high in the British fishing industry. Over the twentieth century there has been a progressive fall in the numbers of deaths, much of this relates to changes in fishing methods and in the types of vessels used. However in recent years, and with a fleet of smaller vessels, the mortality rates from accidents have shown little change and a larger proportion of deaths than in the past have arisen from personal injuries and drowning as compared to vessel losses. Disease makes a relatively small contribution to mortality at sea and this has dwindled with the decline in distant water fishing. Suicide and homicide both feature in a small way, but rates cannot readily be compared with those ashore. CONCLUSIONS: The pattern of change in vessels, fisheries and fishing techniques over the study period are complex. However, improved injury and drowning prevention is the most important way to reduce deaths, coupled with attention to vessel stability and maintenance. The social, economic and organisational features of the fishing industry mean that securing improvements in these areas is a major challenge.

RESUMO

The vast majority of Malaysia's fishermen are located in rural areas, specifically in the Western and Eastern coastal regions of Peninsular Malaysia and the Sabah and Sarawak central zones. In these areas, the fishing industry is relied upon as a major economic contributor to the region's residents. Despite the widespread application of various modern technologies into the fishing industry (i.e., GPS, sonar, echo sounder, remote sensing), and the Malaysian government's efforts to encourage their adoption, many small-scale fishermen in the country's rural areas continue to rely on traditional fishing methods. This refusal to embrace new technologies has resulted in significant losses in fish yields and needed income, and has raised many questions regarding the inputs to decision making of the fishermen. Drawing on multiple literatures, in this article we argue for the use of a mental model approach to gain an in-depth understanding of rural Malaysian fishermen's choices of technology adoption according to four main constructs--prior experience, knowledge, expertise and beliefs or values. To provide needed inputs to agricultural specialists and related policy makers for the development of relevant plans of action, this article aims to provide a way forward for others to understand dispositional barriers to technology adoption among fishermen who use traditional methods in non-Western contexts.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Workers onboard freezer-trawl (FT) and freezer-longline (FL) vessels in Alaska may be at high risk for fatal and non-fatal injuries. METHODS: Traumatic occupational injuries onboard vessels in the FT and FL fleets were identified through two government data sources. RESULTS: The annual risk of fatal injuries was 125 per 100,000 FTEs in the FT fleet, and 63 per 100,000 FTEs in the FL fleet. The annual risk of non-fatal injuries was 43 per 1,000 FTEs in the FT fleet and 35 per 1,000 FTEs in the FL fleet. The majority of injuries in the FT fleet occurred in the factories and freezer holds, whereas the most common injuries in the FL fleet occurred on deck while working the fishing gear. CONCLUSIONS: The findings confirmed that workers in those fleets were at high risk for work-related injuries. Injury prevention should focus on removing hazards in the work processes injuring the most workers.

This paper includes the current status of the Cichlidae family species introduced in Colombia, with special emphasis on tilapia,. analyzing the situation of its distribution, management, and the impact and status of these illegal activities. The number of intriductions is up to 26 species, among which 12 have been found in freshwater and estuarine habitats. There are several hybridization and transplant cases to different hydrographic basins. Their presence in the aquaculture production farms and,in the fishing industry in recent years, worsens even more the future of native species.
